Sturm, Ruger & Company was founded by and in 1949 in a small rented machine shop in , . Just prior to their partnership, Bill Ruger had successfully duplicated two Baby in his garage from a captured Nambu that he acquired from a returning US Marine at the close of WWII.  Although deciding against marketing the Nambu pistols, he incorporated the Nambu's rear style cocking device and a modified Nambu's silhouette into their first commercially produced which became so successful that it launched the entire company. Ruger firearms is the nation's fourth largest firearms manufacturer and the only one producing firearms in all four market segments: , , and . From 1949 through 2004, Ruger manufactured over 20 million firearms and currently offers models for , , , and .

Introduced shortly after the Security Six in 1968, the Service Six model, or alternatively the "Police Service Six" was an attempt to capitalize on the lucrative law enforcement service revolver market. The Service Six was a basic fixed sight model and like the Security Six mostly manufactured in .357 Magnum, however some police departments specified .38 Special and 9mm calibre only firearms that restricted the market.
